Shaping the way forward
Following a failed competition to find a suitable 3rd bridge crossing from the mainland to Abu Dhabi island, we were approached to develop new bridge ideas. A bridge at the mouth of the creek connects an existing highway to the airport and beyond and a new feeder road to downtown.
The new bridge at the mouth of the creek. is 842m long and is composed of three main arches sup-ported by four piers and two additional sets of supports, or feet, on the Abu Dhabi island side. The main span is 140m (460 ft) wide.

Bridging the gap
The 68m (223 ft) wide roadway became the third traffic route from the mainland to Abu Dhabi and was designed to carry 16,000 vehicles an hour on two four-lane carriageways. It also includes emer-gency lanes in each direction and a pedestrian footway. The largest arch towers 63m (206 ft) above the bridge deck.
